ASSIGNMENT No. 2
Q.1 Focus on the current situation of COVID-19 pandemic in our country and give five examples depicting each of the following functions. Use appropriate expressions each time.
- Certainty
In Pakistan where COVID-19 (coronavirus) cases are increasing, business leaders seek to learn practices from locations that have experience with the operational, human and financial implications of the crisis. Anecdotally and through surveys, we are observing a wide range of reactions from leadership teams to the situation. Many companies are making decisions that remain highly aligned with their purpose and values and are increasing (or at least stabilizing) certainty for employees, as well as other key stakeholders such as consumers and investors. This differs from the companies that are making decisions with less attention to purpose and values and/or are potentially increasing levels of uncertainty for these groups.
- Uncertainty
For Treasury, the uncertainty Covid brings means it is essential to remain flexible in its economic forecasting, work to scenarios, and be upfront about the uncertainty involved when modelling the scale and nature of fiscal risks. However, there is some good news. Because of Pakistan’s successful health response, and the financial support provided through the response and recovery effort, our economy is performing better than expected. Before we get too carried away with positive growth in sectors like construction, and indicators like business confidence rebounding quicker than expected, PM reminded us that this is all relative. The country has suffered a sharp economic downturn and we are not yet close to where we would have been without the pandemic. The outlook is still uncertain and remains closely linked to our health response. Until we are on the other side of a successful vaccination programme, there will continue to be significant impacts particularly for supply chains and international tourism. PM’s sobering message was that there is still a long way to go to fully recover.
Q.2 Write a dialogue between two class fellows and compare and contrast merits and demerits of coeducation system in Pakistan.
Waqas: I am very sorry.
Akram: Why?
W: Fraz has been fined.
A: Why?
W: He teased a girl class-fellow.
A: But he is very pious and cannot do this wrong action.
W: Fraz is not at fault.
A: Then who is at fault?
W: It is only due to co-education.
A: Why?
W: Co-education is the bone of many evils.
A: No, you are wrong. This education system exists all over the world. It has many benefits.
- This is an economical way of teaching both sexes. The government of Pakistan is not in a strong financial position to teach both sexes separately.
- This system gives a chance to both boys and girls to understand each other.
- This system creates a confident atmosphere for future life.
- This system can easily solve, many of our problems.
W: But Islam does not allow mixing up of male and female. Co-education harms the personalities of both sexes. They indulge in fashion and love affairs. We should not make our daughters the bounties of society but make them good Muslims. The first purpose of education is to read and understand the teaching of Holy Quran as a Holy Book of Allah.
W: Thank you very much for your advice Mr. Akram.

Q.4 Write a detailed descriptive paragraph based on a convocation ceremony you have recently attended. Write a catchy topic sentence, add relevant supporting details and end it conclusively. Your paragraph should be both cohesive and coherent.
Today, my university has held an annual convocation ceremony in which high school students are enrolled after passing the tests successfully and exceeding them and offering them certificates of appreciation and praise for their good conduct and discipline during the academic year. The ceremony began by greeting the student who presented the ceremony to the principal of the school, the masters of the teachers, the masters of the parents and the dear students. And a student with a beautiful voice read the Holy Quran, Then a third student introduced Hadith Sharif urging to seek knowledge, and then the acting group presented a short comedy play. This play dealt with the difference between the diligent student who makes every effort to collect the science and the failed student who does not know the value of science and learning. After that, the principal of the school presented a speech in which he praised the students and praised the teachers for their great efforts to teach their students and encourage them to innovate and help them to solve the problems they experienced, whether academic or social problems. He wished the students more excellence and success. One of the teachers called the names of the first students and were honored by the principal of the school who gave them certificates of appreciation. The students also gave each other a wish, hoping for success in the coming years. And everyone went away and each of the students carries a beautiful memory inside him about the years he spent in school and about his friends who spent the most beautiful time with them.
Q.5 Write an essay of around 300-350 words on the following topic.
Pakistan in the 21st Century
The sole purpose of education is to bring change in the personality of the human being so that the educated one may lead a purposeful life ordained by societal norms and customs. Sadly, education has not been on priority in Pakistan. The cart has always been put before the horse on this land .This approach from the all-time ruling class has made us suffer from inferiority complex while comparing our achievements in the education fields with the world’s advanced countries.
This criminal planned ignorance has strengthened the hands of prestidigitation, hocus-pocus, shame palmistry and illusion practicing people who weaken the superstitious’ faith and make their belief weaker, deprive them of their valuables. These social ills prevail and dominate the education-deprived societies. The cruel impostors have gripped the whole of Pakistan, the victims even after losing their precious time and money; do not come out of the world of falsehood.
The major factor behind this phenomenon is low literacy rate, if we look at the literacy rate of the Asian countries, we are far behind, Pakistan with 67.5%.Georgia99.7%, Japan99%, Israel 97.1%, China 95.5%, Hong Kong 93.5%, Indonesia 90.4%, Iran 85%, Iraq 78.2% and India 74%, and so on. And if we look at the government expenditures on education, no pleasant figures will gladden us; Pakistan is with 2.7%. Who is responsible? Surely, we, the public and the fate fashioners of the country have played their respective shameful roles. This enables fraudulent people claim to ‘foretell’ the future and relieve the problems loaded day-dreamers of their hardships. Interestingly, they are suffering more than their prey, yet most of us find peace in self-deception.
These human enemies have deepened their roots in every major city and are ‘at large’ with merciless assaults on the poor’ pockets. The solutions to this problem; mass education campaign, full-fledged action against such enemies of the humanity and public awareness through media and education institutions will help purgation of society from unwanted elements. We, the public, should give up the tradition of holding the government for the wrongdoings committed by us. The Sindh wall chalking Ordinance and ‘The Punjab Prohibition of Expressing Matters on Walls Amendment Ordinance’ were nicely taken steps which not only stop property-defacement, but also save the human being from the sectarian fire.
Q.6 How would you grant and refuse permission in the following situations. Use different expression each time.
- Your friend wants to use your car.
I am really sorry but I can’t allow you to use my car. I do hope you understand my position.
- A stranger wants to use your cell phone to make a car
1 understand you are in some kind of urgency but I am sorry I cannot give my mobile to make a car for you. I do not have enough credit in my mobile for you to make a phone call. I am really sorry’ .I can’t help.
- Your class fellow is asking for your assignment
I will give you my assignment and you can get it photocopied. But please do I have prepared my notes with a lot of hard work. And do return them as soon as you get them photocopied.
- A colleague requests to use your computer system
I am really sorry but I can’t allow you to use my office computer. I have some very important and confidential files saved on my computer and I cannot under any circumstances allow anyone to get access to them. I do hope you understand my position.
- Your sister wants you to drop her at her friend’s home
You have asked me for drop you, but I am really sorry I cannot drop to you because my father won’t allow it.
Q.7 Explain the difference between fact and opinion by giving five suitable examples of each.
The difference between fact and opinion on the following grounds:
- The fact is described as the statement that can be verified or proved to be true. Opinion is an expression of judgment or belief about something.
- Fact relies on observation or research while opinion is based on assumption.
- The fact is an objective reality whereas opinion is a subjective statement.
- Facts can be verified with the help of evidence or statistics. On the contrary, opinion is not supported by any evidence.
- Facts explain what actually happened. Unlike an opinion, that represents a perception about something.
- One important feature of the fact is that it is universal and does not differ from person to person. As against this, every human being has a different opinion on a particular subject and so, it varies from one person to another.
- Facts are shown with unbiased words, however, opinion is expressed with biased words.
- Facts can change anybody’s opinion, but vice versa is not possible.
- Facts are real information and so it cannot be challenged or debated, but if we talk about opinions, they can be debated.
